Glenn Koenen recently retired as Executive Director of Circle of Concern, a food pantry and social service non-profit in Valley Park in order to run for U.S. Congress in the 2nd Congressional District. Imagine a Congress full of kind, compassionate people who also happen to be incredibly intelligent. Wow.
I heard Glenn speak at West County Dems several years ago and remember one story he told about a man addicted to alcohol and Glenn's approach to helping him. He convinced the man to cut back on the number of beers he drank every night and to switch to a cheaper brand in order to have money to pay bills. Glenn's lack of scolding and lecturing made the man come back to talk to Glenn more often. Eventually, the man decided to quit drinking and join AA.
I was so impressed with this story because most of us, myself included, just do a "tsk tsk" kind of thing when with an addict. Glenn didn't see an addict. He saw a man worthy of his friendship.
Again, imagine a U.S. Congress filled with men and women like Glenn who really care about their fellow Americans. If you are in the neighborhood of Valley Park Sunday afternoon (April 15) around 3 p.m., stop by Young's Restaurant, 206 Meramec Station Rd and meet Glenn.
